Easy to obtain, easy to replace
All the parts used in Calmi are off-the-shelf, meaning they're easy to find and order. They are affordable and simple to assemble.
And if any of the components break, it's easy to replace, which allowed me to experiment and learn as I'm building and testing things out.
NeoPixel ring
A ring of twenty four light emitting pixels shine into the white SLA-printed dome, allowing for different light patterns to be created.
Speaker
Calmi can play sounds and voice-overs through its 3.5-watt speaker and dedicated audio controller.
Charging
The device runs on a lithium battery. You can charge it via the USB-port or wirelessly by using the provided charger pad.
Microcontroller
A dual-core microcontrollers served as a foundation, it has Wi-Fi capabilities and a compact form factor.
Software
The microcontroller runs on custom-written firmware. It manages communication between all components and facilitates communication between the app and the device.
The custom app has been developed from scratch. It enables users to perform complex interactions that they can't easily execute on the device itself.
Many young people today are struggling to find the balance between active and wind-down time. They find it difficult to discover effective relaxation techniques. Studies have shown that younger generations face higher stress levels than previous generations.
This project aimed to create a product that teaches people when and how to relax through a seamless connection of software and hardware.
I oversaw the development of Calmi from concept to product and was personally responsible for creating the design and technological elements. The result is a proof-of-concept product comparable to the Apple HomePod or Nest Home, usable anywhere in the house.
Calmi helps users discover relaxation in the physical world through the digital. Calmi’s companion app tracks users' activity habits, and sends them break reminders, personalized guided stress-relieving exercises, and creates calming environments through ambient lighting and soundscapes. The Calmi interface is simple and easily controllable through the app or the buttons on the top of the device.
The project began with exploratory research. In interviews conducted with psychologists, many emphasized the importance of good sleep and mindful relaxation for well-being. One quote in particular stood out. “It’s not that we work too much; we simply take too little rest.
Time spent scrolling through social media, playing video games, or watching Netflix is not always good enough. Conscious efforts to calm the body and the mind are essential to relaxation. Calmi provides a path for those struggling with overactivity to find peace.
Experiments were conducted to discover how technology could aid personal relaxation through audio, visual, and aromatic triggers. The HRV results indicate that combining these elements led to the most substantial improvement in the level of relaxation. Individuals could see long-lasting results if they could learn simple relaxation techniques, including the various components. These research findings formed the basis of what would become Calmi.
After sketching the initial drafts, 3D-printed prototypes were created to find the best look and feel. At the same time, different off-the-shelf components were tested and fitted to find the right balance between aesthetics and functionality. All concepts and the final enclosure were made of biodegradable plastics to ensure a sustainable footprint.
The Calmi companion app streamlines device setup, tracks progress, and provides a curated library of content. Users can select exercises or calming ambiances from a range of cards displayed on the screen, suitable for both daytime use and bedtime relaxation.
Setting up Calmi is easy. Just press the device's connection button on the back, connect it to the internet via the app and create your profile.
Pick an exercise or select a soothing ambiances via the app. Begin your selected session by pressing the start button on top of the device.
All of the content for Calmi is stored in the companion app and can easily be updated through app store updates. I curated relaxation sessions by blending sound, light, and spoken word.
The sessions are themed, with some providing story-driven structures such as guiding you through a ‘Forest Walk,’ while others educate users on relaxation techniques such as ‘Learning How to Breathe.’
